[Year 2023]
Always feel grateful to be one of the karate students of Sensei Robert
(Bob) Campbell. To me, Campbell Sensei is a great teacher who
treats us very well, and the ways of Uechi Ryu he teaches us, I would
progressively pass these knowledge on to my students when the time
comes, no matter it is the Okinawa way, the old style, the Southern
Chinese influenced, or Campbell Sensei his Tiger methodology which our
Okinawa seniors appreciated.
This is what we should do for our teacher, as well as for our lineage
under Sensei Kanei Uechi & Sensei Ryuko Tomoyose their huge
contributions, back to the old days when the system & methods of Okinawa
Uechi Ryu were brought to the famous Mattson Academy of Karate in
Boston, Massachusetts.

Uechi-Ryu Karate home training in Hong Kong,
Mr. Bill Ng under
Sensei Robert J.
Campbell.
--------
Little sharing:
In 2010, I contacted Sensei Robert J. Campbell through the referral of
Sensei Jay Salhanick. After a year, I was and I am still always
lucky enough to become a private student of Campbell Sensei, then I
started to train with Sensei directly and mostly in the Home Dojo & the
Garden Dojos. Apart from studying Martial Arts, I was also
awakened & enlightened to open my horizon widely, as well as to learn
how to become an open-minded Karate-Ka.
At first, I learned from Campbell Sensei about his Street Smarts
Self-Defense, and the three core Kata "Sanchin", "Seisan", "Sanseiryu"
of Uechi-Ryu Karate, along with his "Tiger methodology"
[Ref]. In addition,
I then further study the system of Okinawa Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do as a
lifelong practice, for passing down the arts to the new generations.
Today, I still keep reviewing the methods of Uechi-Ryu Karate and
focusing on targeted training, according to the guidance of Campbell
Sensei.
Because of my personal preference and for self-defense, I practice
Uechi-Ryu Karate for years. "Born to be small, may be easily targeted by
the criminals". Having "Street Awareness", doing exercises and
practicing Martial Arts, are my daily activities. Two years ago,
there were five trackers following me & my travel companion on the
street next to the night market in Bangkok of Thailand, and we had
avoided the threat safely. The efforts you put in, may not be
responsed immediately; however, if you can always equip yourself,
it may bring you a positive result or reduce your loss, when you need it
one day.

Okinawa island, as the birthplace of karate, you can meet some new faces
here, especially the karate lovers & practitioners who come from
different countries, kaikans, dojos all around the world.
Attending the class, most will focus on the study, and care very less
about other's skin color, political views, or any personal values &
beliefs. Many come for the same thing - Karate, or and Ryukyu Kobudo.
Sensei Tetsuhiro Hokama shared me one of his open-hand applications of
Sanchin, and arranged his associate instructor Nicolas Baldwyn-san (left
in photo) to practice with me for several techniques of Bubishi.
"Young man, jump higher!" Hokama Sensei gave me his instruction during
the another practice - Nunchaku.
Before leaving the dojo, Hokama Sensei looked at me and a western lady,
soon he made a joke. Hokama Sensei smiled, talked to the lady about
"maybe you can find a boyfriend here", then he turned his head and asked
me "do you have a girlfriend now?".
Good memory.

[May 2017]
Campbell Sensei always tells us that we are free to learn from other
teachers under mature respects, or to join the trainings in any groups
and dojos, as following the path of Budo.
Before meeting Shimabukuro Sensei (middle in photo) and his son Daiki
(left in photo) in Okinawa, I mostly focused on the studies of the three
katas of Sanchin, Seisan & Sanseiryu, along with various applications of
Uechi Ryu techniques for self-defense taught by Campbell Sensei.
It was truly great to train in different dojos during the Okinawa
travels. Most of the senseis and senpais are very nice, yet their
forearms and power are super strong. You need to well-prepare your
conditioning before the visits.
After my returns to Hong Kong, Campbell Sensei keeps teaching us more
and reviewing my practice day by day, even more often than the past
years. I believe those years were the tests of patience to us, like the
way how Kanbun Uechi Sensei taught Sanchin to his students.

"Karate has now become popularized in the world, which there is an

Mr. Robert Campbell was ranked as one of the Top 10 fighters in All

Master Kanei Uechi, the head of Uechi Ryu Soke Dojo, said: "Mr. Robert
Campbell is the most threatening foreign fighter, who has ever existed
in our Uechi Ryu history. The title of All Okinawa Uechi Ryu
Champion is possible to be taken away from Okinawa to America this
time". Mr. Robert Campbell has been studying Uechi Ryu over 15
years (since the year 1962), and he dreamed of being hand-to-hand
teaching in Okinawa.
Mr. Robert Campbell said: "the Uechi Ryu karate method in the Soke Dojo
is the same as our America Dojo, although the careers of the teachers
are different between Okinawa and Amercia. I feel that I am being
blessed and hope to learn from these different careers".
Mr. Robert Campbell has a strong sense of etiquette and shows good
manner on how to respect Master Kanei Uechi (When Mrs. Uechi served tea

The Lineage of Uechi-Ryu International]
|
The predecessor of Uechi Ryu
International Karate-Do Association is Uechi Ryu Karate Association Hong
Kong, which was authorized to be established in 1980s, and we are the
first Uechi Ryu Branch in Hong Kong. Besides, we are also the legal
martial arts organization under the registration of the governments.
Our Chairman, Sensei Robert (Bob) J. Campbell, who is publicly
recognized as Hanshi & Kyudan of Uechi Ryu Karate-Do, and he was
appointed and issued two charters from the direct authority of Master
Kanei Uechi in late 1970 & 1980s, to be the Uechi Ryu Official Representative of both Philippines and Hong Kong. The
first Uechi
Ryu Karate Dojo in Philippines was located at the prestigious Manila
Polo Club. For Hong Kong, the first Dojo was located at the Queen
Elizabeth Stadium of Happy Valley.
Mr. Campbell was the New England & Canada Karate Champion, and a
member of the New England Karate Team. Mr. Campbell taught uniformed
officers, body guards & security staffs for several countries, as well
as most senior members of governments. During this time, Mr. Campbell
was given a name of "Gold Leopard" by a senior officer, due to his
fierce eyes & fast, cat like speed.
Afterwards, Bill Ng, a private student of Sensei Robert Campbell,
passed the examination in 2017 and becomes the first ethnic-Chinese
instructor in both Hong Kong and Macau, who holds the black belt
qualification & teaching certificates of Uechi Ryu Karate-do. In
addition, Bill was appointed as the Official Hong Kong Representative &
Ambassador of Uechi International, to carry on the mission of the
development of Uechi Ryu Karate-do in Hong Kong.
In 2019, Bill passed the Nidan test, and officially
started to open a New Hong Kong Dojo (Open Group Class) for teaching
Uechi Ryu Karate-Do in Hong Kong. In the same year, Bill was
further appointed as the Official Macau Representative of Uechi
International.
In the beginning of 2020, Bill paid attention to the need of flexible
training time & place, and considered the Budo's concept of "Karate and
Dojo are everywhere", then he also established the Uechi Ryu Karate
Yuboku Dojo. In November 2020, Bill is honored to receive Sensei Robert
J. Campbell his old Uechi-ryu karate black belt (since year 1969) as a
token of one of the next direct generations. In 2021, Bill passed the
Sandan test. In 2023, Bill passed the Yondan test.
For spreading the Uechi Ryu Karate-Do in Hong Kong & Macau, Bill's
dojo is also committed to pass down the arts to the new generations, for
those who have the heart to become an instructor, and to open their own
dojos in the future. Furthermore, Bill sets up the
Uechi-Ryu Generations Funding
(UGF) Scheme to offer Free Tuition for the teenagers (with financial
difficulties) who are seriously looking for learning Traditional Uechi
Ryu Karate, and thus they can have a channel to grow up as a balanced,
healthy and better person. Our Hong Kong Branch preserves the
Okinawa Uechi-ryu old knowledge of Kanei Uechi Sensei & Ryuko Tomoyose
Sensei early passed to the America pioneers, incorporating Robert (Bob) J. Campbell Sensei his methods of Uechi-ryu applications which appreciated by the Okinawa
seniors.
--------
The Uechi Ryu Karate
is one of the Three Major Styles (Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Shorin Ryu) of Okinawa Karate,
and it was formerly named
流唐手術.
Uechi Ryu is transformed from the source of Fuzhou Martial Arts, which has become an unique karate style with Southern Chinese influenced methods. The Uechi Ryu Karate emphasizes the short hands techniques &
control skills for close quarter range,
which is good at the Kung Fu of Fingers, Palms, Shoken (小拳), Uraken
(裏拳), Tettsui (鉄槌), Hiji zuki (肘突), Sokusen geri (足先蹴), etc.
It focuses on the martial arts concepts of "Natural Hard & Soft"
(硬軟自在), as well as "Piercing Eyes and Fast Hands" (眼精手捷). According to the story told by
Sensei Kenwa Mabuni (the founder of Japanese Shito Ryu), Sensei Kanbun Uechi
(the founder of Uechi Ryu) described that
流
referred to the rapid speed in its style. Apart from learning
the Self-Defense, the Uechi Ryu practitioners could strengthen their
body & willpower, and keep their mind healthy during the years of
practice.
We, Uechi-ryu International (HK Branch), follow the concept of
Okinawa Karate -
Self-Defense for the
Basic and Final target of our training in
Budo. Our course will be mainly focused on
practicing Uechi Ryu Karate-Do, and we
also concern about the Balance development
of Mind, Body & Spirit,
in order to fit in with the
proper attitude of being a Traditional
Karate-Ka. The Culture of our Dojo: Respect each
other, Overcome the ego, Non-competitive &
Unaggressive.
It aims to maintain a peaceful and
friendly relationship among the members, as well as to maintain a
healthy and good learning atmosphere & environment of the dojo.
"The Secrets reside in Training the
Heart", we attend to the Balance of Safe
& Practical, and pursue the ideal
"Shin, Gi & Tai" (Mind, Skill, Body)
under a series of Uechi Ryu Karate practice. |
