was invited by the Okinawa Karate-Do Association (Kanagawa Dojo) to participate
in the 8th International Exchange Seminar and
to teach his Southern Chinese influenced methodology in Uechi Ryu Karate. |
Sensei Robert (Bob) J. Campbell started
learning Uechi Ryu Karate in 1962, at the
Mattson Academy of Karate, Columbus Avenue,
Boston, Massachusetts, USA, under the
instruction of the Father of Uechi Ryu in
America - Master George E. Mattson.
In 1969, Mr. Campbell passed the Shodan
test, with Master Kanei Uechi, Ryuko Tomoyose,
George E. Mattson presiding as Board Judges.
Later, he would become the Chief Instructor at
the Mattson Academy located on Hancock Street,
Boston. In late 1970 & 1980s, Mr. Campbell was
appointed and issued two charters from the
direct authority of Master Kanei Uechi, to be
the Uechi Ryu Official Representative of
both Philippines and Hong Kong.
In the Philippines, Mr. Campbell taught
Uechi Ryu Karate at the prestigious Manila
Polo Club and years on, he also taught
uniformed officers, body
guards & security staffs for several
countries, as well as most senior members of
governments. After Mr. Campbell moved
from the Philippines to Hong Kong, he held the first
Uechi Ryu dojo at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium,
next to the Happy Valley of Hong Kong Island.
During this time, Mr. Campbell was given a
name of "Gold Leopard" by a senior officer, due to his fierce eyes & fast, cat
like speed.
Years 1968-1974, Mr. Campbell, was a member
of the New England Karate Team & became the USA
National Champion, in Team Kumite, Kata &
Weapon, at the USA - Open, Grand National
Championships, held in Dallas, Texas. He was
also the Champion in numerous other Karate
Competitions in New England and Canada. The
highly popular Black Belt Magazine featured
Mr. Campbell several times. In Boston's
Chinatown, Mr. Campbell studied under Master
Chan Pui in the Northern Praying Mantis Style,
he trained forms & weapons, as well as traditional
Southern Chinese Lion Dance.
Years 1976-1983, supported by
Sensei David
Finkelstein, Mr. Campbell travelled around the
World visiting and training in Dojos in
Europe, as well as Japan, Taiwan, Okinawa,
Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, in
order to advance his studies of the Martial
Arts. This travel included studies at the Da
Peng National Academy in Taipei, Taiwan and a
lengthier stay with studies at the Oomoto
Monastery in Kameoka, Japan.
Today, with the accumulation of travels and
time in various Martial Arts studies, by Mr.
Campbell, our Uechi Ryu Dojo in Hong Kong
concentrates in teaching traditional Okinawa
Uechi Ryu training incorporating unique
methods of Uechi Ryu applications known as
"Tiger methodology"... the journey continues!
